Reasons Why Delhi and Mumbai are in the List Top Global Cities

In the list of top 30 worlds’ most powerful, productive and connected cities, India has also bagged appropriate position in it. Two of its cities: Delhi and Mumbai has showed up in this list.

The study was conducted by International Real Estate Consultancy JLL (Jones Lang Lasalle) in which the city of seven islands Mumbai was spotted 22nd position while the capital Delhi was on 24th spot in the list. The city which topped the list is Tokyo following London, Paris and New York, being the top four “super cities” of the world.

Having said that, let’s discuss the points which made Indian cities viz. Delhi and Mumbai appear in the list.

Mumbai

In this research by JLL, Mumbai has been 22nd in the list of world’s top 30 “super cities” as well as it is also in top 10 list of “improvers” which consist of cities those who have improved in terms of commercial attraction from the last couple of years. Others cities in this top 10 list includes Madrid (Spain), Milan (Italy), Istanbul (Turkey), Jakarta (Indonesia), Tehran (Iran), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Lagos (Nigeria), Cairo (Egypt).

"With growth exceeding 7 per cent in the city over each of the last three years, it is no wonder that Mumbai made a strong presence in the top list," JLL quoted for Mumbai. But, Check out the facets which made it possible for Mumbai to be what it is today:

Highest GDP

Mumbai is also considered as financial capital of India as this city is having highest GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in the country and is also home to billionaires and millionaires of the country being the richest city too.

♦ Port

Mumbai port is the busiest and largest port inside India. It came into existence since 1873 and today it holds around 11 percent of the total sea-borne traffic of India which will grow more in the coming times. The export/import from the city is one of the major things which have been going on here.

Bollywood

The entertainment factor in the city also plays a vital role in its growth. It generates the revenue of around $2 billion (Rs. 10000 crores) annually and is gradually increasing from time to time. The city is famous for Bollywood just as Los Angeles is known for Hollywood as well as all the famous celebrities also reside here.

♦ Bombay Stock Exchange/ NSE/Commodities

Back in the days, there was cotton industry and a harbor in the city which as a resultant proffered first stock market of country. Presently, it is having largest and oldest Stock exchange in India through Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Also, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) as well as headquarters of all minor and major banks is present here.

Connectivity

From the local train to public buses or Metro to Monorail or drive though your personal vehicle around the city, the inhabitants are proffered with numerous ways to stay connected inside the city. As well as, Railway network is accessible to the entire destinations in India and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport which is one of the busiest airport of India is also present here for flying abroad.  Though the major ways through which people are connected in the city are The Eastern Freeway, Metro and Monorail.

Delhi

The capital Delhi is ranked 24th in the top 30 “super cities” list. Basically, Delhi is a National Capital Territory, a kind of Union Territory. Being an NCT is as close as it gets to being a State. There are various factors due to which it has got this position. Have a look:

Highest Per Capita Income

According to reports, Delhi is having highest per capita income among all the states in India at Rs. 2,40,849 during financial year 2014-15. It has increased from Rs. 2.12 lakh to Rs. 2.41 lakh this time which show rise of around 13.50 per cent and it is going to be even more in coming times. It is because of presence of industrialization here dealing in almost everything. Though, the key service industries are information technology, telecommunications, hotels, banking, media and tourism.

♦ Political Address

Being the capital, it is also a political city with the presence of SC, Parliament, Homes of Ministries and Lutyens Zones.

♦ National Capital Regions (NCR)

Delhi is connected to major states of North India such as Haryana and Uttar Pradesh which contribute in its growth. The National Capital Regions (NCR) is very well connected here providing great inflow and outflow of business from here.

♦ Transportation

Delhi is having best mediums of transportation for the people here. Delhi metro is no doubt providing best in the class travel experience to the natives in the Delhi and in NCR too. Other than this, on road, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses runs here. Indira Gandhi International Airport is the busiest airport of South Asia which offers easy accessibility to travel via air. The airport is very well connected through Delhi- Gurgaon Expressway. The Railway network is also attainable through New Delhi Railway Station and Anand Vihar Terminal. Recently, odd-even car rule is applied on private cars to minimize the traffic and pollution here by the Delhi government.

Tourism

Delhi is having finest Institutions in its vicinity providing world-class education to students which overall helps the country in every way as “Education is considered as best tool”. It is chosen by students from all over India and abroad to have their education here as it is having best institute in science and technology, arts as well as all other fields through Indian Institute of Delhi (IIT), University of Delhi (best university of India),  Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indira Gandhi National Open University, etc. Also, schools either administered by private organisation or government runs here providing best education on school level to the students.

Overall, both these cities are having commendable facets which make them deserving in this list. But, still many things need to work on to match the level of top-notch places of world. Fortunately, the cities are changing its face rapidly as the time passing by and going on the path to become best place in world from all aspects.
